OOC Information
Name: Lark
Age: gettin creaky
Pref. Pronouns: she/her
Contact: Discord: Plagueheart#0051; Plurk: plagueheart
Current characters: n o n e
IC Information
Name/Alias: Vervain Gardener
Age: 20s? 20s.
Occupation: Young priest for ur exorcisms, beekeeper
Born with The Vice?: starts screaming (yes)
If yes, do they use it?: doesn't stop screaming (yes)
Appearance: Short. Blond. Blind. Probably has some gnarly scars under that blindfold if what little is visible is anything to go on.Built Ford tough has some real muscle under those homespun robes. His hands are calloused from more than writing; more often than not he's got dirt under his nails.
History:
+ Grew up in Riverthwaite-by-Turn, a tiny agricultural community in Woodsedge that did nothing to deserve that clunker of a name. Or close proximity to Turn.
+ Dad was an outsider to the community; Mom the Troublesome Daughter of the local parson.
+ Childhood fine, All Things Considered; Mom largely ignored him, Dad & dad's bastard son raised him.
+ A bad thing happened & Dad died (F). It looked like an accident but also Ver's older brother disappeared mysteriously in the night not long after so ??? ? ?? ?. Mom weirdly not bothered by any of this; assumes care of child.
+ After about a year of maternal mismanagement, Ver's grandmother steps in on the pretext of she's taking on her successor and sweeps Ver off to become A Religious Nerd.
+ Also gives him the job of taking care of the parsonage's beehives to keep him out of trouble. He's good at it. Perhaps... too good...
+ Life goes on. Ver makes a good baby priest barring occasional misadventures with the other kids. Loves the gods, loves his bees, loves taking care of the shrine.
+ Then One Day the wind blows out of Turn, Ver encounters Something in the woods, rips out his own darn eyes.
+ Yikes.
+ Once he's tolerably recovered and back to his usual sunny self (maybe), grandma announces he's to go Learn Something of the Outside World before he can take orders.
+ Summarily packed off to Northcliff Pass, and a possible pilgrimage, with a letter of introduction in his pack.
Personality: Distressingly devout, but also distressingly optimistic and sweet-tempered. 'Thwaite was small enough everyone literally was family at some remove and they did Well Enough at being well-adjusted (given the givens) that a sunny kid like Ver could grow up with a trusting heart and the naive belief that everyone is Trying Their Best.
(He knows better, given his mother, but he still wants to believe.)
At the same time he's surprisingly blasé about Weird Crap. The Night spits things out to test and torment humanity, that's how the world goes; you trust in the gods to protect you but everyone's gotta die some day.
(This might be a blithe mask he assumed to cover the screaming, gibbering terror that made him tear out his own eyes. But you know, you gotta keep living with yourself somehow.)
Abilities:
+ Literate. If he had anY EYES TO READ WITH. Similarly his penmanship would be acceptable if he could see what he was doing. (Sadly his education, secular and theological, is limited to the four books his grandmother brought with her to 'Thwaite. But he's a quick learner!)
+ Beekeeping. He'll keep all your bees. He might even give them back if you ask nicely, but why would you do that? You don't know how to keep bees; he does.
+ Gardening. He's a solid Okay at it & doesn't mind getting his hands dirty to tend plants. Still learning how to recognize many of them while blind.
+ Navigation. Had a good (some might say uncanny) sense of direction to begin with & has adapted fairly well to being blind. Doesn't usually need much help getting around.
+ ....The Vice (Earth bent): He's preternaturally good at taking care of bees & always knows where he is relative to true north. Plants grow better for his attentions. Also, did you ever notice his blessings for getting rid of vermin work really well??
Reputation:HE NEW. Ostensibly here to get some more experience in a priest's pastoral duties, the larger world, caring for pilgrims, etc. before taking orders and going back home to Nowheresville.
He Less New now. Generally known for his sweet temper and painful earnestness. Willing to go the extra mile for just about anyone in the village because that's his job, don'tcha know.
The parson/his grandma back home in 'Thwaite wrote him a nice letter of recommendation to the tune of "keep him away from anything uncanny and for gods' sake send him on a pilgrimage as soon as possible to get the eldritch stink off him". It may or may not hint there's Other Reasons he should be taking that pilgrimage.
